Terminal 21 Bangkok

Terminal 21 Bangkok

I arrived in Bangkok without any fanfare. The lines at immigration were so long that the first set of counters was full and they needed to rout the rest of us to another area. It took a good half hour to get through immigration.

After collecting my belongings I headed downstairs to the taxi stand, which had modernized since my last visit to Bangkok. There were now three taxi kiosks, only two of which were working. You are supposed to push a button and get a ticket with a lane number on it. They had two attendants there to push the button for you. You then head out to the appointed lane where you load into your taxi and head on down the road. I think it is more efficient and cuts down on some of the corruption with flat rates instead of meters that used to be prevalent at the old airport taxi stand.

Once checked into my hotel, I ran the usual errands – getting cash from the ATM, a local SIM card, and food in my belly. I was pretty tired and called it an early night.

The following day I could either go visit some ancient palaces and temples or those of the modern kind. I opted to go visit one of the latter. If there is one thing Bangkok does like no other city I have visited, it is shopping malls. They are temples to modern consumerism.

I hopped the Skytrain to Terminal 21 Bangkok. It’s one of the newer shopping malls in Bangkok and conveniently located right off the Asoke Skytrain stop.   It has 9 floors, each decorated in a different country or city theme – Paris, London, San Francisco among just a few. As far as shopping malls go, Terminal 21 is really quite impressive.

I made my first visit to London.

Then I headed to San Francisco.

After I had a quick trip to Hollywood.

This view gave me vertigo.

Then it was back to a very deserted Skytrain and off to get a late lunch or early dinner.

Firehouse Pub and Grill has some great burgers.  A small restaurant located on Sukhumviht 11, well worth a visit if you are looking for a good burger in Bangkok.  A little greasy, but delicious. Yum.

Another early night ahead as I had an early departure in the morning to head to Siem Reap Cambodia to see Angkor Wat.
